Overview

Through close examination of ten artists from the NGV Collection, curated for their unique, important and sometimes less visible contributions to art history, you will be able to develop or expand upon knowledge of art history and socio-cultural histories, while developing and refining skills in close looking, visual analysis and interpretation, and critical thinking.

Course objectives

  • Understand the artistic practices, including technique, process, ideas, materials and composition for a range of important visual artists.
  • Develop skills in analysing, understanding and interpreting visual art across different times, places and contexts.
  • Develop skills in close looking and 'reading' visual art.
  • Develop an introductory knowledge of moments in art history and the contribution of key artists to art and social histories.
